Five questions for Markus

How did you first become interested in IT forensics?

My background in business informatics exposed me to the challenges of cybersecurity, which sparked my interest in understanding how digital crimes are investigated and how evidence is preserved to support legal cases.

What aspects of IT forensics do you find most challenging and why?

The most challenging aspect is dealing with encrypted or obfuscated data. It requires specialized skills and tools to uncover hidden information while maintaining the integrity of the evidence.

Can you describe the process of preserving digital evidence?

Digital evidence preservation involves creating a forensic image of the data, ensuring it’s an exact, bit-for-bit copy. The original is kept untouched, and chain of custody protocols are followed to document every step.

What common exploit do you think is the most dangerous?

Social engineering, particularly phishing attacks, is highly dangerous because it targets the human element, which is often the weakest link in security.

How do you keep up with the latest trends and threats in digital forensics?

I stay current by attending conferences, participating in professional communities, and continually pursuing certifications. I also regularly monitor threat intelligence reports and cybersecurity news.
