Blueberries truly deserve to be called a superfood
Science has now learned that eating blueberries reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, alleviates diabetes, and has a positive effect on intestinal flora. The reason for this lies in the berries’ valuable antioxidants. Blueberries contain calcium, potassium, zinc and folate. These health enhancers are complemented by a variety of vitamins and minerals, as well as phytonutrients such as polyphenols and flavonoids.
A group of experts at the University of North Carolina theorized that blueberries may also speed up the brain’s ability to process stimuli.
The healing effect of blueberries became apparent after six months
The resulting study included 86 adults with mild cognitive decline between the ages of 65 and 80. One of the study’s eligibility criteria was that participants had to eat less than five servings of fruits and vegetables per day.
Over a six-month period, the subjects received either freeze-dried blueberry powder or a placebo as a dietary supplement. The researchers found that the mental performance of the people who consumed blueberries daily had improved significantly by the end of the test period.
The most effective ingredient in blueberries also gives them their distinctive color
Researchers believe that the phytochemicals in blueberries are responsible for their beneficial effects on humans. Among the most powerful are anthocyanins, which give blueberries their characteristic color. These compounds protect the berries from environmental stress, fungi, bacteria, viruses, and even radiation.
When the berries are eaten, their highly developed defenses seem to be transferred to the human organism. Metabolic function becomes more efficient and there is also an increase in energy production in the cells. There is currently no known cure for age-related dementia. The results of the study are therefore potentially groundbreaking.
